Recollections of the House of Slaves: Goree

Abdias do Nascimento (1914-2011) was an artists, activist and scholar in Brazil. Known as the a key figure in Brazil’s civil rights movement, his works often centered on Afro-Brazilian religious and cultural themes. He is the founder of the Black Experimental Theater, the first Afro-Brazilian organization to link the struggle for civil and human rights with the recovery and valorization of African cultural heritage. And in 1968, he founded the Museum of Black Art in Rio. Nascimento was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.  Read more.
