Los Angeles native Kehinde Wiley creates portraits of urban black and brown men in poses from classical paintings. When asked about his early paintings that featured a variety of hip-hop artists, Wiley said, “It’s obviously a comment on youth culture and it’s a comment on consumption patterns, but it’s also a comment on who gets to be in those sort of important moments in picture making.”
