Shotgun: Third Ward

American artist Dr. John Biggers (1924-2001) was born in North Carolina. His work is dedicated to “showing the spirit of man struggling above the mundane, above the material, above suffering.” Biggers is known for his narrative murals, often depicting themes from the Black experience in the United States and West Africa. Sadly, several of his murals were painted directly onto the walls of buildings that have since been demolished.

Over the course of his career, he moved from creating works that were overtly critical of racial and economic injustice to works where African and African-American women function as solid and graceful allegories of creativity, life, hope and the survival of a community and culture.
